Festival of Hecate

August 24th marks the Festival of Hecate. Day and Night of the Dark Mother. Of Earth and Sky. Keeper of the crossroads. Seer of the unknown. Queen of the witches. She speaks, and all remains silent for Her. For those that are guided by Her wisdom, honor Her on this day, her ascension from the underworld, with offerings of Earth, Heart, and Soul.

Interestingly enough, the days for this festival can be concluded by who traditionally worships Hecate. Most who honor Hecate, begin to honor her on August 13th. Which aligns with the dark moon, and the perseids meteor shower. This time symbolizes her descent into the underworld and the harvests of the earth.

Fun fact, August 13th was also worshipped for the festival of Diana. Where her followers celebrated her in the groves at Nemi. This festival lasted for up to a week of festivities, food, and dance.

Now, back to Hecate.

Both of these festivals were and are very similar. Especially considering that both Diana and Hecate are triple goddesses, some associate them as one deity. Like I do. Diana to me, is the maiden form, and Hecate is the crone form. Now, on this day, Hecate has had already descended into the underworld, and now begins to rise again to the heavens from her wise journey. And as the Full moon grows full, so will she claim herself as Queen again. With new knowledge and mysteries from the underworld. So, we invoke her and honor her, in hopes for her protection for the coming season, and for her new found wisdom.

How do we honor this Great and Ancient Goddess?

Personally, I honor each of her crossroads. I leave offerings of earth, sky, flame, and sea at each pathway, to open the doors for Her guidance. Her offerings include:

Eggs, Lavender, Honey, Garlic, Baked Goods

Incense, Candles, Daggers, Keys

Having your dog familiar by your side

These are just to name a few. But follow your heart of which offerings would be best for you to give.

I love to leave her lavender honey tea, and burn my special blend of incense for her.

This is the blend I burn while invoking the Goddess Hecate. Add even portions of the ingredients shown, and/or add odd drops of the essential oils to the blend. Smells divine when burned, and uplifts the soul. While the smoke fills the air, call out to Hecate with your own heartfelt chant and await her guidance. If you decide to have your familiar close by, pay special attention to their reaction. Hecate always greets dogs, and reveals herself to them. Keep an eye out for signs, or listen soundly. Often, she comes in dreams in the dead of the night, and reveals her messages then.

I hope this night brings special moments for you, and Hecate grants you her wise guidance.

Feast of Flora

Happy Feast of Flora, everyone!

On this day, we honor those that have past to the underworld. From our ancestors, to those that nearly passed, we give their memory meaning. For them, but also for ourselves. Every day, we face our morality. Either by the face of death, illness, or heartache, we eventually realize the same path we follow. The very same fate our ancestors learned. Because of that, there is comfort that we are not alone to face what is ahead. We shall not fear, for we too will become the next generation of ancestors.

But for now, on this day, we will honor them. We will bring to them flowers from the living, to represent the glory of paradise. And remind those their journey is only the beginning. Their end only a moment of rest. Rebirth is but around the corner. We honor their memory, with love in our hearts. Like those in the future, will one day honor us.

This here is a memory of last year. A message written for my grandmother. Same burning for my ancestors before me. I remember this night well, for I didn’t feel alone. I felt a presence. A spirit that I believe captured in this photo. (Top right)

Well, soon nightfall will be here, and with it, a new ritual to honor my ancestors. I still have the letter to my grandmother, I will burn it tonight and save its ashes for the next year.

I hope this day brings great peace to those who still remember and still honor the old ways.

Great blessings to the ancestors, and to you all.

Blessed Be )○(

The First Spell

The Spirit of Flight. The Spirit of Flight, the force responsible for the powers of movement of the wind and air, has gathered around her all the flying things she loves. Birds, insects, flying fish, swirling leaves, seeds of dandelions and sycamore trees, butterflies and fairies all dance around her in a grand array of wild free motion.:

Today was a day of remembrance. I found myself outside on a beautiful sunny-windy day. Gazing up to the sky, feeling the wind against my skin, reminded me of when I was little and had done my first spell. I smiled to myself, recalling the sweet innocence of magick when I was young. I had little knowledge of the craft but I knew in my heart, despite not knowing the correct term for it, magick was all around.

It was fascinating how magical occasions would arise. For example, whenever I would wish for something with all my might, it would occur, and there I was staring wide-eyed amazed that it had happened. This was especially during a time when my parents would explain how magick wasn’t real. But I had refused to believe that. If that was the truth, then how was it that wishes would come to be every time I truly desired them? It was after this questioning that I remembered I longed for answers.

One day, after a particular disagreement with my parents, I had gone outside. I rested on a swing, fuming with sadness and confusion. I remember feeling utterly alone and misunderstood. It was overwhelming and I admittedly began to cry. Not long after tears were falling that I had suddenly found myself feeling not alone. I will never forget this; it was the first time I ever felt a divine presence. Immediately I was soothed by a comforting light within my heart.

Sweetly, I had asked, “Are you there?”

The wind blew. To clarify, this was a hot dry day. There was no breeze when I was outside until this moment.

Once I felt this breeze, my soul had trembled. There was no denying that I knew something, or someone was listening. Again, I asked, “Are you here to help me?”

Another strong wind. With this, I felt a feminine energy, and a feeling of peace consumed me. I rose from the swing bench and stared up into the sky. “What should I do?”

The answer that came then is truly difficult to describe. All I knew was I had to raise my hands to the sky, and call out. I called for the wind. I don’t know what it was, but I just needed a cool breeze. Needed something to soothe the ache. My request was granted by a wonderful gust of wind, and I remember the unbelievable cleanse that consumed me.It had rushed into my lungs. Chills shot through out my body, and for a moment I felt whole.

Thinking back, I now know I had casted a spell for a purification. A wind spell. And the Goddess had shown me how to do it. Ever so grateful for how I felt, I was a believer after that day. Nothing anyone would say, friends, parents, strangers, had ever shaken that belief. After that, I found myself doing a lot of wind spells. That was my element of choice. That is until I found books to help teach me how to cast with other elements. Every time I had done an element spell, I felt closer to the Goddess, and found where I belonged.

I suppose today, as the wind caressed my face, it casted its own memory spell over me. The beautiful sister wind showing me where my path had begun. To this day, I am so grateful. Grateful to the gifts the Goddess has given me.

Gray Witchcraft

Merry meet!

So I found myself exploring the never ending pins on Pinterest, and came upon a picture that I couldn’t have agreed more to. Gray Witchcraft.

image

Embracing both dark and light,
Without going to extremes.
Acknowledging Ying and Yang.
Gray witches are more than
What you think.
Our magick is powerful.
We use it wisely, and accordingly.
We seek not to harm,
But we will protect, and defend
A witch who cannot curse,
Cannot heal.
-The Lady Hekate

This poem/lesson is a wonderful way to help distinguish the meaning of what is between white and dark magick. Witches of Gray are often times Nature-based. This is because the energies of nature is both light and dark, good and bad, harmonious and destructive, life and death.
This source of magick is strong to tap into. It is powerful because how to truly connect with this energy is by fully accepting the light and darkness that lives within you. It has been said that once you seriously understand and connect with the inner balance that resonates in the soul, you can easily bond with nature and its power.
Every gray witch who wishes to form a connection from this source must learn through the training a few important lessons:
~Ye must respect and honor the balance of nature.
~Ye must not be the judge, victim, or criminal.
~Ye protect and defend the helpless.
~Ye must neither be mute or prideful of your craft.
~Ye accept the beauty and flaws of your own unique magick.

These lessons sounds easy enough, but believe me, I’ve had my moments growing up and finding myself overlooking the balance in order to help a friend. Or had been a victim and thought it right to send forth a karma curse. It took me until my late teens to fully realize that spells and intentions have their own time and place to be casted; when the balance won’t be interrupted. But when it is time to unleash the karma, it will be deployed 100%. Over time, nature (karma) will circle its way in and restore things much to your liking.
In the meantime, learn to heal, to protect, to defend, to cleanse, and find peace.
