Ostara: History, Tea, Recipes

As the chill of winter begins to thaw and the first green sprouts emerge, many around the world turn their thoughts to the Spring Equinox, a time of balance, renewal, and rejuvenation. This period, often occurring around March 20th or 21st in the Northern Hemisphere, marks a pivotal point when day and night are of equal length, heralding the arrival of spring. One of the most enchanting celebrations associated with this time is Ostara, a festival that intertwines ancient traditions with modern festivities.

The Roots of Ostara

Ostara, named after the Germanic goddess Eostre, is deeply embedded in the lore of early Germanic tribes and Anglo-Saxons. Eostre, a deity symbolizing dawn, renewal, and rebirth, was believed to bring about the revitalization of the land and its creatures. This connection between the goddess and the season’s burgeoning life led to the celebration of Ostara as a time of renewal and rebirth.

Although direct historical accounts of ancient Ostara celebrations are scarce, it’s widely accepted that the festival was a time of communal joy, marked by feasting, the exchange of gifts, and the decoration of eggs — a symbol of new life and fertility.

The Spring Equinox Across Cultures

The Spring Equinox has been a significant event across various cultures and epochs, each adding its unique traditions to the tapestry of springtime celebrations. In ancient Rome, the festival of Cybele celebrated the rebirth of nature and the goddess’s consort, Attis. The Celts observed this time with festivities honoring the balance of light and dark, while in Japan, the vernal equinox is a national holiday known as Shunbun no Hi, a time to honor ancestors and celebrate the natural world.

Modern Celebrations of Ostara and the Spring Equinox

Today, Ostara and the Spring Equinox are celebrated by many, particularly those with an interest in ancient traditions and paganism. Here are a few ways to embrace the spirit of renewal and balance:

Decorate Eggs
Egg decorating is a timeless tradition that symbolizes fertility, purity, and rebirth. Whether painted, dyed, or drawn on, these vibrant symbols of life can decorate your home or be gifted to loved ones.

Plant New Life
Sowing seeds or planting flowers is a tangible way to connect with the essence of Ostara — the renewal of the earth. This act symbolizes new beginnings and the potential for growth, both in the garden and in oneself.

Spring Equinox Rituals
Many celebrate the equinox with rituals that focus on balance and renewal. This might include meditations that reflect on personal growth, the setting of intentions for the coming months, or simply watching the sunrise or sunset to honor the balance of day and night.

Festive Gatherings
Hosting a feast with seasonal foods that honor the fertility of the earth is a wonderful way to celebrate. Think fresh greens, dairy products, eggs, and sprouted grains — foods that embody the essence of spring.

Nature Walks
Taking a walk in nature, observing the budding flowers and the awakening wildlife, is a simple yet profound way to connect with the energy of Ostara and the Spring Equinox. It’s a reminder of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth that the season represents.

Ostara Tea Ceremony

The celebration of Ostara, marking the spring equinox and the reawakening of the earth, is a perfect occasion for a tea ceremony that honors renewal, balance, and the burgeoning life around us. This ceremony is designed to be a meditative, rejuvenating experience that connects you with the essence of spring and the cycles of nature.

Preparing the Space

Choose a Quiet Spot. Ideally, this ceremony should take place in a garden or a space where you can see or feel connected to the outdoors. If indoors, surround yourself with plants or flowers to invite nature in.

Create a Serene Atmosphere. Use candles or soft, natural lighting. If possible, incorporate symbols of Ostara, such as decorated eggs or images of rabbits and hares, symbols of fertility and new beginnings.

Cleanse the Space. You may choose to burn sage, sweetgrass, or lavender to purify the area and create a sacred environment for your ceremony.

Ostara Tea Recipe

For this special occasion, crafting your own tea blend adds a personal and meaningful touch. Here’s a recipe that captures the essence of spring:

2 tsp Green Tea
The base of your blend, green tea represents renewal and rejuvenation.

1 tsp Dried Dandelion Leaves
A symbol of the sun’s energy, dandelion aids in purification and new beginnings.

1 tsp Rose Petals
Invokes love and passion, adding beauty and a hint of sweetness.

1/2 tsp Lavender
Adds a calming, aromatic quality, inviting peace and balance.

1/2 tap Lemon Balm
A touch of lemon balm for its uplifting and soothing properties, enhancing joy and clarity.

Instructions:

1. Mix all the dry ingredients gently in a bowl. Take a moment to connect with each ingredient, acknowledging its role in your blend and the qualities it brings to your ceremony.
2. Boil water and let it cool for about a minute to approximately 80°C (175°F). This temperature preserves the delicate flavors of your herbs and green tea.
3. Place your blend in a teapot. Use about one teaspoon of the tea blend per cup of water.
4. Pour the hot water over your tea blend and let it steep for 3-5 minutes, depending on your taste preference.
5. While the tea steeps, take this time to meditate on the themes of Ostara: balance, renewal, and new beginnings. Reflect on what you wish to renew in your life.

The Ceremony

Serve the tea in a cup that you feel is special or significant. If you’re with others, serve them first as an act of kindness and community. Before drinking, inhale the aroma of your tea, fully experiencing its scent. As you take your first sip, close your eyes and focus on the flavors, letting the tea’s warmth spread through your body. After enjoying your tea, spend a few moments reflecting on the aspects of your life you wish to renew or change. Write down your intentions for the coming season on a piece of paper. To close your ceremony, express gratitude for the tea, the company, and the opportunity for new beginnings. If you wrote down intentions, you might choose to bury them in the earth as a symbolic gesture of planting seeds for the future.

This Ostara tea ceremony and recipe offer a pathway to connect with the cyclical nature of life, celebrate the balance of light and darkness, and embrace the promise of renewal and growth. May it bring you peace, balance, and joy as you step into the vibrancy of spring.

Spring Renewal Asparagus Tart

Ingredients

1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
1 pound of fresh asparagus, trimmed (renewal and vitality)
1 cup of ricotta cheese (creaminess and lightness)
Zest of 1 lemon (brightness and zest for life)
1 tablespoon of olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese, grated (a touch of umami)
Fresh herbs (dill or chives) for garnish

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
Roll out the puff pastry on the prepared baking sheet. With a knife, gently score a border about 1 inch from the edge, being careful not to cut all the way through.
3. Mix Ricotta and Lemon Zest:
In a small bowl, combine ricotta cheese with lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Spread this mixture evenly within the border of the puff pastry.
4. Arrange the Asparagus:
Lay the asparagus spears on top of the ricotta in a single layer. Depending on their size, you can align them side by side or overlap slightly. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a bit more salt and pepper.
5. Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden and the asparagus is tender.
6. Garnish and Serve:
Once out of the oven, sprinkle with grated Parmesan and fresh herbs. Slice and serve warm.

This Spring Renewal Asparagus Tart is a delightful nod to the awakening earth, combining the tender, green spears of asparagus with the bright zest of lemon and the richness of cheese, all encased in a flaky, buttery crust. It’s a dish that beautifully balances the freshness of spring with the warmth and comfort of baked pastry, making it a perfect celebration of Ostara’s themes of renewal and balance.

Lemon and Lavender Ostara Cake

This Lemon and Lavender Ostara Cake is a light, refreshing dessert that captures the essence of spring and celebrates the balance and renewal that Ostara represents. The combination of lemon and lavender not only provides a vibrant flavor but also symbolizes the awakening of the senses and the earth’s rebirth. This cake is perfect for an Ostara feast, embodying the joy and vitality of the season.

Ingredients
For the Cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
3 large eggs, at room temperature
Zest of 2 lemons (about 2 tablespoons)
1 tablespoon dried culinary lavender
½ cup whole milk
¼ cup lemon juice

For the Lemon Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon lemon zest
Optional for garnish: edible flowers (such as violets or rose petals), additional lemon zest, and lavender sprigs

Instructions:

1. Preheat and Prep:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan, lining the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal.

2. Combine Dry Ingredients:
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

3. Infuse Lavender:
Warm the milk gently in a saucepan (do not boil), remove from heat, and add the dried lavender. Let it steep for about 5 minutes, then strain, removing the lavender. Allow the milk to cool.

4. Cream Butter and Sugar:
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the lemon zest.

5. Add Dry and Wet Ingredients Alternately:
Alternately add the dry ingredients and the infused milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Finally, stir in the lemon juice until just combined.

6. Bake:
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

7. Prepare the Lemon Glaze:
While the cake cools, whisk together the powdered sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest until smooth. Adjust the consistency with a little more lemon juice or powdered sugar if needed.

8. Decorate:
Once the cake has cooled, drizzle the glaze over the top, allowing some to drip down the sides. Garnish with edible flowers, additional lemon zest, and lavender sprigs for a festive and beautiful presentation.

This Lemon and Lavender Ostara Cake is not just a dessert; it’s a celebration of spring’s arrival, the balance of light, and the renewal of the earth. Its bright, floral flavors are perfectly suited for an Ostara gathering, offering a sweet conclusion to a meal that honors this time of rejuvenation and new beginnings. Enjoy this cake as a symbol of the joy and vitality that the season of spring brings.

Conclusion

The celebration of Ostara and the Spring Equinox is a beautiful reminder of nature’s cycles of renewal and the balance within the universe and ourselves. Whether through ancient rituals or simple, mindful appreciation of the changing season, embracing the spirit of Ostara can be a rejuvenating and transformative experience. As we move forward into the warmth and vitality of spring, let us carry with us the lessons of balance, renewal, and growth.

HERB SUBSTITUTIONS!

Psychic Eye Tea

Happy first of October!

As we step into a new month and steeping sweetly a new season, Autumn covers the veil with mystery and magick. Hence, during this time, we prepare our senses for new wonder and messages from the beyond. This is especially true for the psychics, mediums, fortune tellers, witches, craftwielders, etc. Most could say that the month of October inspires great energy, and tingles the senses. Taking into account the energy that is produced by the Draconids Meteor shower on October 8th, the great Blood Moon on October 24th, and the ever legendary Samhain night, on October 31st.

For such an inspiring month, let’s get started on stimulating our psychic senses and be prepared for what messages or signs our spirit guardians send to us. I give to you a tea recipe that I enjoy drinking on the first day of October. May it empower your own psychic powers, and center your third eye.

*fair warning. Be sure to be ready to open your psychic sensitivity after drinking this tea.

Psychic Eye Tea

Brew tea with boiled water, and let steep for 6 – 12 minutes. Add honey. Or milk. Or both. As you stir the tea clockwise, focus your gaze to the very bottom of the cup, to where it is darkest. Dive your focus to that center, as the liquid spins. Clear all thoughts. Then chant to yourself:

My eyes are open, the mind is clear.

I see the truth, with no fear.

My senses are open, the channel is clear.

I will receive, what no one else will hear.

Then sip the tea. Take your time. Enjoy it, relax into it. As though you are going into a trance meditation. Indeed, feel around with your senses. Touch your third eye, both physically and mentally. Note to yourself if you feel any sensitivity, pulsing vibration, or weightlessness. If you do feel any of these signs, then you are on the right track, and get ready.

You may repeat this brew once a week throughout the month. However, keep in mind to not proceed if you begin to feel too sensitive. Also, please be considerate, and do not drink this tea if you are pregnant or nursing, or not in top physical health. Thank you.

Well, enjoy! And have fun with your new found psychic awareness. Help others with your gift, but above all, grow yourself and be proud for who you are.

Psychics Need Tea Too

Ultima Purgatio Ritus

Welcome!

This ultimate purification ritual is a seven day-long devoted process. It is to heal and nurture the mind, body, and spirit. One must be prepared to dive deep and confront what needs to be healed and let go. Each purifying day will feel fulfilled and renewed, but keep going to the very end. Each day is significant for our soul, or chakras, what have you.

Thank you for the love and support!

When you have the week ready, begin the night before with this special tea right before bed.

Purification Tea

1 tbsp Black Tea
1 tsp Chamomile
2 tsp Fennel
2 tsp Hyssop
1 tsp Valerian

*Always be aware of your body and health, and only drink this tea if you are of good health. Please consult with your doctor otherwise.*

Make each day your own, but still follow along the same lines.

Day 1

Find a place of the Earth. Whether that be a park, a forest, or even the backyard. Anoint your pulse points with oil of Sandalwood and Patchouli, blended in jojoba oil. Lay out on the ground, barefoot, and hands faced down. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Find the center of your energy and match to that of the Earth. When you feel the connection, start to meditate on all that you fear. If you’ve experienced abandonment, neglect, major illnesses or surgeries, physical abuse, or inherited traumas, this is the time to meditate on these fears. Understand this and be honest with yourself; in no way allow these fears to torment you. Don’t hang onto them. Pour the negative energy out from you, into the ground beneath it. Visualize the fears being buried. Do this for however long you like, till you no longer feel the heavy weight. And notice a significant lightness, or renewed energy. Rise.

(If it helps to talk, speak all that you fear to the Earth.)

Day 2

Brew a cup of Jasmine tea. Then either prepare a bath, or go to the beach, lake, pond. Placing your feet into the water, drink the Jasmine tea, and then fill the cup with the water at your feet. Gaze deep into the cup of water. And feel its pull. Once you feel entranced, pour the cup of water over you. Feel yourself becoming one with the energies of water. Then submerge your whole body. As you soak, begin to meditate on all the guilt brewing in your belly. This is the time to release any guilt due to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Neglect. Alcohol or drug addictions, etc. Again, don’t let this stick on your insides. Let it stir in a whirlpool of energy. When you’ve finished swirling the guilt through you, pour it into the water. Feel the water’s cleansing energy flow and replace the negative. When you have absorbed enough, feel the tingling cool rush of power in you, step out of the bath, beach, pond, or lake. Air dry.

Day 3

Write down all that you are ashamed of, be honest with yourself. The burning burdens that way you down. Focus on what you wish released. Then either build a pyre, or a fire pit, or in a fire place. Create a fire. Sit and stare into the light. Feel its warmth, smell its burning flame. Be a part of the fire. Get lost in its essence. When ready, toss the page into the fire, not losing your concentration. And as the paper is burning, speak out loud all that was written. Watch it burn into nothing, and yet be purified. If you feel capable, and remaining safe without causing yourself harm, be brave and place your hand near the flame. Absorb the fire’s strength and courage. Allow it to renew you, to embolden your spirit. Either stay to watch the fire burn out on its own, or carry on as it’s burning, but always remember that the courage of Fire will never die.

Day 4

One would hope that it is a breezy/semi windy day for this. However, if it so happens to be windy on another day then do this, rather than another. But if there is absolutely no wind on any of these days, then you can create your own, by using a fan. Or you can take yourself to higher ground, where there certain to be wind. Have blended Sandalwood and Rose. Burn the incense and call to the wind. When the wind blows, feel its smooth and uplifting caress. Feel it course through you. Placing your hands over the incense, speak or meditate on all that you grieve for. What weighs down on your heart. When ready, and if the wind picks up, lift your hands and touch your heart. Begin to pull your hands away from your heart slowly. Visualize all your grief being removed from you, and drifting off into the wind. When you feel relieved of this, focus back onto the air. Breathe in each breeze that caresses you. Let it fill in the hole that was left behind. When you feel light and tingly, rise up, and turn to go. Releasing one final breathe.

*The following three days will be focused on purifying the inner soul. It will be challenging, because it is meant to tap into the inner psyche. Be brave, but above all, be honest with yourself.*

Day 5
Find a comfortable area that permits no light. It can be a simple dark room. But it must be one that you feel absolutely safe and secure in. Prepare a spot where you will be either laying or sitting at. Gather moonstones, lapis lazuli, aquamarine, or turquoise stones, and lay them out in a large circle around you. Have meditation/calming music playing in the background. Get comfortable in the darken room, and relax. In the beginning, focus on nothing but the dark. Do not think of anything else. Adrift with the sounds of the music. Free your mind, until it feels balanced. When ready, begin to ponder all the lies that have plagued you. That others have told you, what you have told yourself. Face them. Confront them. But don’t be angered, or upset by them. Approach these lies with the truth. Your truth. And accept this, recognize and secure this truth. Believe in it, and let it soak into your being. When you are done, rise, and walk back into the light, with your new found truth.

Day 6

On a sunny day, go outside. Bring with you two crystals of either amethyst, or fluorite. As well as oil of rosemary, or lavender. For those with sensitive skin, be sure to wear SPF protection. Find a favorite spot, preferably at a place where you have been before. Sit comfortably, and relax. When ready, anoint your forehead with oil. Place the two crystals on both palms facing up. Begin to meditate, clearing your mind. Explore all that you feel is a illusion in your life. All that you thought was real, but had not been, or that continues to be. This is the hardest challenge because how does one see an illusion when they are blinded to it? You must open your third eye to see. To face the reality that is in front of you, and the delusion that others place on you, or what you place on yourself. This may take time. If you feel your mind begin to wonder, return it back by repeating “ham-ksham”, and refocusing on the question, what is an illusion in your life? Most do not wish to face this, but once it is understood, the soul is nearly purified. Once this is done, and the challenges faced, raise your face to the Sun and let the light shine into your soul. The light of certainty.

Final Day

This is it. The full completion of your purification. The end of your pilgrimage towards spiritual well-being, and self love. Go to a place that incorporates all the elements from the past week. Such as a park near water, with candles of white or purple, and incense of Jasmine and Frankincense. Where one could feel the breeze, hear the birds or music, see the light of the Sun, and sit in the shade under a tree. Or in your own home, with all these elements gathered around you. Begin your meditation. Clear thought, relax. Focus on all the elements around you. When ready, start to reflect on all that you had worked on, the strength and grips that you let go. Feel accomplished. Begin to speak words of love to yourself. Compliment yourself. Express how much you love yourself. How much you mean to this world. What you deserve, and have conquered. Don’t sell yourself short, don’t hold back. Give it your all. Then, relax once more. No thought. Only sense. Reach out and connect to all of your senses. To the energies all around you. Lay back. Rest. And if you fall asleep, let it be so. Be free. Awaken anew.

Blessed Be ~*~

Angel’s Water Recipe

Greetings and Merry Meet!

Angel Water, or otherwise known as Aphrodite Water, has been a traditional recipe passed down in my family. However, my grandmother called it el agua de Angel. After many years and research, and much to my surprise, I came across it in different writings but all the same recipe. It was a thrilling find.

El agua de Angel was a face toner and bath water in my family, but through my research I learned that it is often used in beauty spells and aphrodisiacs. Made a lot of sense when I found that out. Many of my aunts found good husbands.

Other than to inspire love, it can also be used to cleanse the love between a couple. As well as cleansing for self-love.

My grandmother used to create the recipe using floral water and an infusion of the leaves and roots. Blending them together just right to create the tonic. It is a longer process, but the smell was enchanting and fresh.

The recipe consists of mostly Myrtle. A small tree, often with white, pink to purple flowers. My grandmother used the flowers, leaves, and stems. It is this tree that invoked the magical properties of love and beauty. In my studies, this is also a sacred tree to Aphrodite. Depending on how much your making, make certain that the recipe has a little more than half of Myrtle in it.

Angel’s Water recipe

On special occasions, I love to add a beautiful orchid.

Heat water to 170 – 185 degrees. Pour over the mix, and brew for 3 minutes before enjoying. If you want a stronger brew, steep the flowers and zest for 5 minutes, then add the white tea for another 2 minutes.

As the tea is brewing, I chant over the pot:

Brew of flowery delight, bring together friendships might.

A delicious scone recipe to compliment this tea, would be a sweet fruit scone.

Sugar Raspberry Scone

  • 2 1/2 cups All purpose Flower, plus more for work surface
  • 1/4 cup plus 1 tbsp of Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Baking Powder
  • 3/4 tsp Course Salt
  • 1/2 cup or 1 stick unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 3/4 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 1/2 cup fresh raspberries, 6 ounces

Instructions:

Mix dry ingredients. Mix wet. Then little by little, add wet to dry. Knead the dough thrice. Pull apart dough to create a scone shape. Place onto parchment paper on a baking pan, add raspberries and sugar on surface. Place in 400 degrees oven, for 15-18 mins.

Enjoy! Blessed be.

A Friendship Tea Spell

First Harvest Tea

WELCOME!

Today marks the first harvest as some would also associate this day as Lammas. This is a time of special blessings to family and friends when all come together to share a feast of breads and meal. Before such a gathering, the crops are harvested, and blessed with the energies of man and nature. These blessings are to summon good fortune for the coming Autumn Season.

Today, my husband and I have prepared a meal for two. We will light a blessing candle and share this feast in love and in balance. Last night, I created a dessert to fit the occasion. A delicious banana pudding. And to partake alongside such a scrumptious treat, I made a brew of tea to fill our minds and soul with creative wisdom.

Tis a perfect brew to share with friends and loved ones with some delicious breads and treats.

Creative Wisdom Tea

  • 1/4 cup of pitted Cherries (frozen, fresh, or canned)
  • 1 teaspoon of dried Sage (or 1 tablespoon of fresh)
  • 1 Black Tea bag.
  • slice of Lemon
  • add honey to your liking

*Recipe is per 1 cup.
*It is also delicious over ice, but if one wishes to make it this way, the recipe must be doubled.

Bring the cherries to a boil in a sauce pan, then simmer and steep for about 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, strain the fruit through a sieve, pressing the cherries. Discard the cherries, or do what I love to do and puree them for morning shakes (waste not). Return strained mixture to saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Add sage and tea and allow it to steep away from the heat for 5-10 minutes (the longer it steeps, the stronger the flavor). Strain the sage and tea, and add honey to sweeten and magically blend the brew together. Add a slice of lemon and enjoy!

Every time I brew a tea, I always say a prayer to bless it for the occasion. In this case, the chant was:

In this pot I enchant and brew,
A spell that is pure and true.
I conjure wisdom and creativity,
In this tea that honors the divinity.
As we drink, the magick shall spread.
Creativity and wisdom shall be our friend.

So, brothers and sisters, have a beautiful first harvest and Lammas! Blessings to one and all!
